NSW Learner Licence Support and Drive for Life
The NSW learner licence is a government-issued licence stage with its own rules and tests. Christians Drive for Life Liverpool NSW is a community support organisation that works inside that framework. It does not run it.
This page is not a full guide to NSW licensing. It explains the official stages that matter most for learners in a support program, and marks where program help fits. For anything beyond the summary here, go to the NSW Government pages linked throughout. They are the only authority on licence requirements.
What are the stages from learner to provisional licence?
For a learner under 25: pass the knowledge test, then hold a learner licence for at least 10 months while logging 120 hours. Then pass the Hazard Perception Test, and then the driving test for a P1 licence.

- Learner licenceApply with proof of identity. Drive only with a fully licensed supervisor.
- Supervised practiceUnder 25: at least 10 months on your Ls and 120 logged hours, including 20 at night.
- Hazard Perception TestA computer-based test of recognising risks on the road.
- Driving testPass the practical test to receive a P1 provisional licence.
Learners aged 25 and over do not need to complete log book hours or the minimum learner period. They can take the Hazard Perception Test when ready, and they must still always drive with a fully licensed supervisor.

Where does program support fit?
Government requirements are fixed. Program support helps learners meet them. The NSW Government controls every column except the last.

Which learner conditions apply on every drive?
- Drive only with a supervisor who holds a current full Australian driver licence and sits next to you
- Display L plates clearly on the front and back of the vehicle
- Do not drive faster than 90 km/h
- Have zero alcohol in your system
- Do not use any mobile phone while driving
- Do not tow any other vehicle

These conditions are the same in Liverpool as everywhere else in NSW. They apply whether you practise with family, a driving instructor or a program mentor.
Can any hours be credited to the log book?
Yes. Two NSW Government schemes let learners under 25 credit extra hours. Neither is run by Christians Drive for Life Liverpool NSW.
3-for-1 structured lessons
Each 1-hour structured lesson with a driving instructor licensed in NSW can be logged as 3 hours. No more than 10 instructor hours can be credited this way. Bonus hours count as daytime driving, not night driving.
Safer Drivers Course
Learners under 25 with a valid NSW learner licence and at least 50 logged hours (not counting bonus hours) can complete the course for 20 bonus log book hours, once only. A fee applies. The NSW Government also offers a limited number of free places to eligible learners.
Supervised practice with a volunteer mentor is logged as the time actually driven, with no bonus multiplier. Check the NSW Government pages for current fees and eligibility before relying on either scheme.
Licence questions
Does taking part in Christians Drive for Life give me a licence?
No. Only the NSW Government issues driver licences, after you meet its requirements and pass the relevant tests. Taking part in the program is support. It is not a separate way to get a licence.
Do licence rules differ in Liverpool?
No. NSW learner licence rules are the same across the state, including in Liverpool.
